WEYU Integrates Chainlink VRF to Bring Verifiable Randomness to Its NFT Ecosystem

4 min readJan 18, 2022

A new day brings with it another exciting and significant milestone on the WEYU journey — and one for the NFT space as a whole — as WEYU integrates Chainlink VRF. The integration of Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) helps secure the fair and random distribution of NFTs across the WEYU ecosystem on the Ethereum, Polygon and Binance Smart Chain (BSC) mainnets, helping drive mainstream adoption of NFTs.

Before we stride full steam ahead, it’s important to first understand what blockchain oracles like Chainlink do, and what exactly Chainlink VRF is.

Why Do Blockchain Oracles Matter?

Oracles in the blockchain space are in many ways similar to prophetic oracles, which received precognitions of the future and acted as a medium between two worlds. In this case, blockchain oracles act as a secure medium between the blockchain realm and the real world. This is needed because blockchains are self-contained and lack access to external resources, a limitation commonly known as the blockchain oracle problem. Oracles solve this problem by providing access to information and other off-chain services that would otherwise be unavailable to them or too expensive to perform on-chain.

Chainlink is the industry-leading decentralised oracle network, allowing smart contracts to access off-chain data and systems existing outside the blockchain in a highly secure and reliable manner. Additionally, Chainlink offers a multitude of off-chain computation services, Chainlink VRF being one. Chainlink has been at the forefront of smart contract innovation for years, and in 2020 was recognized by The World Economic Forum (WEF) as one of the top 100 “early to growth-stage”’ Technology Pioneers of the year.

The Value of Chainlink VRF in the NFT ecosystem

Chainlink has pioneered a robust and verifiable source of on-chain randomness through a solution known as Chainlink Verifiable Random Function. In practice, this means that smart contract developers can use VRF as a source of tamper-proof random-number generation. For NFT projects and platforms, which regularly use randomness for minting, distribution, and more, Chainlink VRF acts as a crucial source of verifiable on-chain randomness, giving users high assurances that any and all randomness-needing functions are fair and unbiased.

A key component of Chainlink VRF is that it enables smart contracts to access randomness without compromising on security or usability. With every new request for randomness, Chainlink VRF generates a random number and cryptographic proof of how that number was determined. The proof is then published and verified on-chain before it can be used by any consuming applications. This process helps to ensure that the results cannot be tampered with nor manipulated by anyone, including oracle operators, miners, users and even smart contract developers.

With the ever-expanding necessity to deploy smart contracts in the blockchain ecosystem, Chainlink VRF offers a safe and secure way of generating random numbers for easy probability in numerous domains.

Why Did WEYU Choose Chainlink VRF?

At present, attaining access to an unbiased source of randomness that users can verify is difficult. Random Number Generators (RNG) that live on-chain can be manipulated by blockchain miners, while off-chain RNG solutions are opaque and unverifiable — so users have no proof that randomness was not influenced. The integration of Chainlink VRF helps to overcome this hurdle, offering verifiable assurances that WEYU NFTs, like WEYU Pieces, and NFTs that feature across the WEYU ecosystem are provably random, and therefore fair in their distribution and minting processes.

To start, WEYU has integrated Chainlink VRF to help power its WE_Launch Lucky Draw Game System, in which Chainlink VRF is used to help randomly distribute NFTs to users.

Building the NFT Platform of Tomorrow

The integration of Chainlink VRF across the WEYU NFT ecosystem leads to a more transparent, fair, and exciting user experience — something we value highly — as users have on-chain proof that rare NFT traits and collectible items featured on the WEYU ecosystem were generated in an impartial and fraud-proof manner. As we continue to build out a multi-chain platform that is accessible and user-friendly, Chainlink VRF helps provide users with an equal chance of receiving the most valuable NFTs and items.

“Given the network’s proven reliability and security, deploying Chainlink VRF in the WEYU ecosystem as a randomness solution was a straightforward decision. VRF is perfect for our multi-chain ambitions because it is accessible across the vast majority of leading blockchains. It will act as crucial infrastructure for reaching WEYU’s end goal of spearheading mainstream adoption of NFTs through fair, transparent, and user-friendly experiences.” — the WEYU team.

About Chainlink

Chainlink is the industry standard for building, accessing, and selling oracle services needed to power hybrid smart contracts on any blockchain. Chainlink oracle networks provide smart contracts with a way to reliably connect to any external API and leverage secure off-chain computations for enabling feature-rich applications. Chainlink currently secures tens of billions of dollars across DeFi, insurance, gaming, and other major industries, and offers global enterprises and leading data providers a universal gateway to all blockchains.
